Background of the Study
Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a prevalent condition that significantly increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Globally, it affects millions, with a substantial number of cases reported among healthcare professionals, including nurses. The demanding nature of the nursing profession often exposes nurses to high levels of stress, which can contribute to the development and exacerbation of hypertension.
Effective stress management is crucial in controlling blood pressure levels. Educational interventions focusing on stress reduction techniques have been shown to improve blood pressure control. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes the importance of stress management in hypertension management programs (CDC, 2024).
Despite the recognized importance of stress management, there is limited research on its impact on hypertensive nurses, particularly in the Nigerian context. The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital provides a unique setting to explore this relationship and develop tailored interventions.
Statement of the Problem
Hypertension among nurses poses a significant health risk, potentially impairing their well-being and job performance. The high-stress environment inherent in nursing can exacerbate hypertensive conditions. However, there is a paucity of data on the effectiveness of stress management education in controlling blood pressure among hypertensive nurses in Nigeria.
Without targeted interventions, hypertensive nurses may experience uncontrolled blood pressure, leading to severe health complications. A study by the Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association (2024) highlighted the need for comprehensive educational programs to assist healthcare professionals in managing hypertension effectively.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study targets hypertensive nurses employed at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. It aims to assess their knowledge and practices related to stress management and evaluate the impact of educational interventions on blood pressure control. Limitations may include reliance on self-reported data, which could introduce bias, and the study's restriction to a single institution, which may limit the applicability of the findings to other settings.
